Chicago
Chicago which is situated in the state of Illinois is the third largest city in the United States with more than 2.8 million people. It is located on the South-West Coast of Lake Michigan. The city is often referred to as “The Windy City” or “Chi-town”. Chicago was founded in 1833 following the Treaty of Chicago which forced an Indian tribe out of their land. The city became important nationally because it was an important transportation hub between Eastern and Western United States. Today, the city retains its status as a major center, both for industry and tourism. Its International Airport is the second busiest airport in the world.
Chicago is one of the most visited cities in the US: in 2007 the city attracted 32.8 million domestic visitors and about 1.15 million foreign visitors. Most of them come because of the city’s architecture, of the thousands of restaurants, of the endless shopping to be done along Michigan Avenue, the museums, or just the beaches and non-stop fun during the summer. Some of Chicago’s most known monuments are its skyscrapers like Sears Tower which is the tallest building on the American continent, but parks, and museums are also very popular. The city of Chicago is a great sport city; it has a team in every major professional sport. The Cubs and White Sox in baseball, the Bears in American football, the Blackhawks in hockey, the Bulls in basketball, and the Fire in football. The sports bring excitement to the life in the city, especially since the teams are often pretty good.
Chicago is also the adoptive city of the current and 44th president of the United States Barrack Obama.
