Madrid is the capital of Spain, currently one of the most vibrant cities in the world and living more than three million people from different backgrounds and cultures, was born from a smallfortified enclave called Mayrit or Matrice Muslim. Which derived its name from the current Madrid referred to its original location at the foot of Old San Pedro Creek that ran along what is now the Calle deSegovia. Elected in 1561 as the seat of the court of Philip II, Villa y Corte de Madrid became the first permanent capital of the Spanish monarchy. Madrid is open to visitors from the station ofAtocha, the emblematic point of the city's history, now converted into a modern railway complex where they meet all th e necessary services for all types of travelers. From the station it is possible tostart several of the key tourist routes to discover the capital of Spain.
