Doubting one’s self can negatively influence the extent of one’s success. If you are too afraid to even try something new, you have already accepted defeat. To be an effective teacher, it is necessary to posess a great deal of confidence to earn and maintain the respect of a student. This does not mean that at times, a teacher does not slip-up on their words or mispronounce a student’s name. On the contrary, there is just as much of a possibility that a teacher to make a blunder as any other professional individual. For instance, in attempts to organize all of my tutoring documents, I created a filing system with the subject titles and the student’s name printed on each folder. It wasn’t until I gave the student the folder to put away his progress chart, that I realized I three other folders with the same spelling error. Upon discovery, I immediately corrected my mistake and promptly refocused the session on the student’s course materials. The student and I were able to enjoy a brief moment of laughter yet without delay refocusing our attention to the subject at hand. I believe that when a student sees that a teacher is not perfect and can make errors just as they do, it can a comforting, reassuring feeling that can cause less anxiety when completing tasks.
Consequently, being a student can be quite overwhelming at times. There are so many expectations from external and internal forces that at times students may feel so much pressure that they cannot perform. For example, in the initial first few tutoring sessions that I had with a student, he often refused to read anything out loud. However, when prompted to read a text and answer questions in a written manner, the student was very successful in his responses.
