Hogarth's Gin street & Beer lane

At first sight it seems like both engraving have a very different message, Gin lane shows gin's harmful effects whereas Beer Lane shows the goods of beer. But if we have a closer look to them we can see that in fact they have a common message, they depict the bad aspects of alcohol.

Gin lane looks like chaos, people are sick, like the woman on the stairs who has syphilis, they are all dying or already dead. If it's not because of sickness it's because of alcohol or starvation. There is no food a an is eating a bone, people are thin or even skinny like the guy down the stairs. It doesn't seem to disturb them because they feed of gin. It's every man for himself we can see people fighting, probably to have some gin. Even children are are drinking, a woman gives some gin to her baby. Their only objective is to drink, this will lead them to get drunk-dead. Nothing's right, the buildings are crumbling just like their residents. On the contrary Beer street seems to be a happy world, people's expressions are totally different, they are smiling and enjoying their day. Unlike people in Gin lane the ones who are in Beer street are healthy we can see food (fish). There are two lovers and no children are drinking. One of Gin lane's shop sign is a coffin, on Beer street it's a sun it shows the contrast between the two engraving.

But they are not so different. They have in common more than the title and alcohols. The landmark is the same, Gin lane&Beer street must be close to each other. But it's more than that. None of the characters are working, except the pawnbrokers from who they get the alcohol, they are all drinking
One of the buildings is starting to crumble, so will people in beer street if they keep drinking.

Those engravings show how gin is harmful but they don't sing the praises of beer.
We can ask ourselves if the happiness of Beer street will last, maybe we can see in Gin lane the future of Beer
