Commentary : Big Brother is shouting at you
Introduction:

The document we have here is a an article extract from the dailymail's website which was published in September,2006. This article deals with the place of talking cameras in our dailylives , of these advantages and drawbacks. This article is based on the experiment of this type of cameras in Middlesbrough. So, is this new technology good for our life, security, liberty or is it just a proliferation of spy gadgets ?

On a first part, CCTV talking camera gives the possibility to live in apeaceful land and prevent from the anti-social actions, the violence and the crime.

-The aim of the plan, based on the Middlesbrough where seven of its 158 cameras has fitted loudspeakers, is to reduce anti-social problems in town centres by giving orders to people who commited offences.
-In fact the camera gives verbal warnings, for example as it's mention on the text : 'We are watching you'(l;5). But as it's explains on the article to l.26 from l.29 the control room operators have been given strict guidelines about what commands they can give. So for instances sentences like “Oi you, stop that”, is not permitted. And sentences as “Warning - you are being monitored by CCTV” (l.28) is prefered.
-Also, if someone drops litter they could be told to pick it up or as it is mention inthe text to l.14 from l.18 if you are cycling in a pedestrian area, you could be told to get off your bike. For exemple, to make the young man respect the law, the talking camera says to him : « would the young man on the bike please get off and walk ».
-The fact is that because “Most people are so ashamed and embarrassed at being caught”(l;8-9) they understand that the thing they just haddone is bad so they don't begin it again anymore because they become aware of their acts. When everything is monitoring it's much more complicated to do a offence, a crime because you have in mind that you're controled so you also have in mind that it is really more esaly for the police to find evidences to put you on jail. That's why CCTV cameras are interesting to secure people or most of themand to assure everydoby's liberty. Besides, thanks to the talking camrera you can prevent from offences It is all the more interesting because at this moment you can avoid premeditations of offences, for exemple when someone is approaching a person with a kniffe, or a gun...
-An other important thing is that with the cameras and their loudspeakers people are reassured : 'But Middlesbrough does...
