Fort-Coulonge
In 1695, Nicolas d’Ailleboust who was “Sieur de Coulonge” established the first fur trading post in the area. The fur trading post then became the village of Fort-Coulonge. In 1845, George Bryson had a small house built of stone on his farm located on the edge of the Coulonge River. It served as the headquarters and it is now called “maison Dagenais”. In 1873, the first wooden church was built in Fort-Coulonge. It was later destroyed by the fire in 1884. In 1956, Mr Jean-Baptiste Migneault built a sawmill at the “Dépot du Davidson” near the Dépot lake, a few kilometers north of Chutes Coulonge. The sawmill helped to populate the area as it has created many jobs.
Fort-Coulonge also has a high school. There is a flag in the middle of the yard and there is a cross country/ATV trail in the forest. In the English class, there are many dictionaries and computers.
