INTRODUCTION:

-This picture is a cartoon in the guise of a comic strip.
-It was made by David Wiley Miller for the Washington Post in 1999 (nineteen ninety nine)
-This picture deals with the problem of tobacco in our current society.
-In 1999 (nineteen ninety nine), there was a big increase of the price of tobacco and we can suppose that this caricature is laughing at it.

1ere PARTIE:

-This caricature is divided in five chronological parts.

1) -In the first part, we can see a teenage boy who is smoking a cigarette but he also seems to be healthy.
-He doesn’t look very clever and by the way, he remains us the stereotype of teenage people who are often shown as not interesting person with no motivation, etc…
-Moreover, he’s wearing black sunglasses and a black t-shirt which is quite a sign of anonymity.
-Furthermore, the slogan above this picture “independunce day” stresses this situation because it’s a play on words around the word “dunce” which is a synonym of “idiot”.
-Under this slogan, we can see the sentence “brought to you by the American tobacco industry”. In other words, the “independunce day” is a public holiday offered by the industry of tobacco.
-The boy on the picture is saying “yo… it’s da bom” which is a slang sentence, just like “that’s cool” or anything…

2) -In the second part of this caricature, we can still see this boy smoking a cigarette in the middle of the picture.
-but he’s now a bit more little. He seems to be bent and not as healthy as at the beginning.
-Above his head, there’s a new sentence which is saying: “Hey, Kids… Smoking doesn’t just make you cool like your favourite movie star, it’s good for the economy, too”.
-The boy is saying “rock on !” just like he was having fun in smoking and helping the economy. It shows us the lack of critical mind of this teenage boy.

3) -In the third part of the picture, the boy still there but he looks in poor health because of smoking. He’s skinny and tired but he keeps
