Agenda setting theory
Mass media is considered as influencing machine that manipulates people s choices actions and behavior. Lots of people are influenced by what they see on TV or hear on the radio, or red on the internet. For this reason, governments and business organizations try to use it for their own goals. The control is done implicitly and that by applying several methods such as the agenda setting theory and lipperman theory. In fact, we can identify some news papers that belong to political parties; the reason why these political parties own the news paper is to influence the audience and to build a good image for the party. This paper aim to explain the functions of the agenda setting theory in order understand how it is used in reality, and how far it affects the audience. The agenda-setting function of Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw shows the influence that the media has on a public audience. it also referred to gate keeping, is the process that allows some information to reach the audience while other information is kept out. In this theory McCombs and Shaw politics are used as an example of agenda setting. The United States is the place where the media uses mass media as the source of all the information that should be known. In this paper, I will discuss a case of an article that I red in web site. Then, I will analyze the article and highlight the use of the agenda setting theory.
The article that I chose is about consequence of polygamy. The author Chaka Doumbia described the events of the story and gives the audience a clear picture about how the accident happened.
