Paul Auster

Paul Benjamin Auster (born February 3, 1947) is an American author.
Auster was born in Newark, New Jersey, to Jewish middle class parents of Polish descent Samuel and Queenie Auster. He grew up in South Orange, New Jersey and graduated from Columbia High School in adjoining Maplewood. After graduating from Columbia University in 1970, he moved to Paris, France where he earned a living translating French literature. Since returning to the U.S. in 1974, he has published poems, essays, novels of his own as well as translations of French writers such as Stéphane Mallarmé and Joseph Joubert.
He married his second wife, writer Siri Hustvedt, in 1981, and they live in Brooklyn. Together they have one daughter, Sophie Auster. Previously, Auster was married to the acclaimed writer Lydia Davis. They had one son together, Daniel Auster.
He is also the Vice-President of PEN American Center.

By age 13 he began writing "poems and short stories stupid" in his words. It was at this time that he discovered baseball, a passion that will be discussed in several of his novels. Before finishing high school, he went traveling in Europe, where he visited Italy, Ireland, Spain and France.Back in the USA, he joined the prestigious Columbia University in New York. At 18, he published the first articles on film for the review of the university. He spent a year in Paris as part of an exchange student, and returned to New York where he graduated in English and Comparative Literature. At this time the U.S. does not please him decidedly in 1971, his graduation, he moved to France for three years, during which he saw for odd jobs and translations, and wrote poems and plays It is theater in the United States penniless.In 1979, the death of his father at the time of his divorce, Paul Auster wrote her first autobiographical book, The Invention of Solitude, it will fail to publish three years later.
