Venus and Mars

I)Venus and Mars was painted in 1483 by the famous Italian artist Sandro Botticelli of the Florentine School during the early Renaissance. This painting is a tempera and oil on poplar and her dimension are 69cm x 173 cm
II)Like most of the painting at the time, this one is believed to have been ordered by the Vespucci family due to the wasps around the face of wasps (Vespe in Italian mean wasps ) however it might also be a request from a women who's husband was a philanderer and who thought putting this painting in top of their bed will bring him back to her. The work was probably a bed head or the “spalliera” (backboard of a chest or day bed).
This painting was inspired by the Roman mythology.
III)On the left, Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty, appears emotionless, looks in control of herself and her feelings. She was inspired by the famous Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci who also was a model for many Botticelli painting, including “Venus Birth”. Even though she is dressed, we can notice the curve of her feminine body. She is very pretty compared to the others representation of women at the same time; we can also remark her hair, blond Venician which is not very common. On the left, Mars, sleeping peacefully. Around his head, wasps despite that they might represent the Vespucci family, they may be no more than the symbol of love. Again, as for Venus we have a really realistic representation of Mars's athlete body. While Venus is emotionless we can see that Mars had succumb to the goddess charm. Around the two mythological god, four little satyr: one in the right corner under Mars arm and three other “playing” with him: they have stolen his headset and his spearhead which at the right end they had put a shell, reminding Venus place of birth, and with what they are playing trumpet in Mars ear without him noticing anything.
In the background, trees and the see which are again reminding Venus.
