In the beginning of the 19th century, Josep Bernat, the paternal grandfather of the founder of the Chupa group Chups® builds a reputation as a first manufacturer of sugar refineries of Spain and opened a store in one of the most important commercial districts of Barcelona (Spain). Soon, this shop was transformed into small factory of confectionery and his six children were to also put the shoulder to the wheel. At the time of the war of Spain, the businesses were certainly destroyed, but the art of the manufacture of confectioneries survived and was transmitted from generation to generation. In 1950, at the 26 years age, a grandson of Josep Bernat, Enric, had accumulated sufficiently of experiment while working for other manufacturers of confectionery and decided that it was now time to found its own company.
It opened its clean small factory of confectionery under the name of Productos Bernat and the businesses went good progress. Jointly with Nuria Serra, his wife, the girl of another manufacturer of confectioneries in Barcelona, they posed the stakes of their new project. In 1954, Domingo Massanes, a family friend owner of the company of the food sector and weakened confectionery, Granja Asturias S.A. and manufacturer more than 200 various products starting from apples, proposed to him to repurchase its company.
