Commentaire the litterary and potatoe peel pie society
GL&PPP society was written by 2 authors : Mary Ann Shaffer and her niece Annie Barrows. M A Shaffer passed away in 2008 => didn’t get to see the novel come out , however it was her idea at the beginning
WW2 : finished , its consequences are depicted through letters between ≠ characters : members of the L&PPP society & Londoners
Our extract : beginning of exchange of letters between Dawsey Adams & Juliet Ashton. Him : inhabitant of island of Guernsey, Her : writer, Londoner. Subject of his first letter : he has got a book with her address & name on the cover. Real reason : wants to have books bcse they’re rare even if German Occupation is finished
These 2 letters: show us topics of whole novel = historical context of island of Guernsey & of London + litterature : deeply important in life of characters. Thus we will see these 2 aspects + then epistolary genre.
I : POST-WAR CONTEXT
German Occupation : over => people can contact each other, can write to each other = reason why Dawsey takes opportunity to write to J.A. the 12th of January. War finished but books still missing : Dawsey wants to read more.
1/ 2 Protagonists with nothing in common
Dawsey Adams : citizen of Guernsey, farmer “I live on my farm” p.9
Juliet Ashton : homeless in London, has lost her flat “I no longer live on Oakley Street” p.12 but stays in the Central London area of Chelsea bcse artist’s place of living
Don’t seem to have anything in common : but have just 1 commong point : lived hard conditions of living during the WW2
2/ Privations & Scars
References to restrictions bcse of German Occupation (even if they are no longer on the island) : “through the Germans are gone now, there’s aren’t any bookshops left on Guernsey” p.9 “ a roast pig we had to keep secret from the German soldiers” : can’t keep animals, had to give
