Dior codes and style analysis

During our preparatory work for the IFM Dior case, we decided to analyze further the Dior codes, those we knew already, such as “the cannage”, but also the ones we discovered during our store visits, books reading or interviews with the Dior house employees.
We segmented this analysis depending on the inspiration “basis” of the now well known Dior style and codes and looked at the “history” of their “entrance” in the Dior world as codes.
1. Inspired by Granville
1/ 1New Style Louis XVI
In 1955, for the first Dior Boutique on the corner of Avenue Montaigne, Mr. Dior asked his architect Victor Grandpierre to imagine a setting very loosely based on his taste for French furniture of the eighteenth centuries. Dior decorating style is born with, as emblematic element: the medallion-backed chair that inspires many accessories such as necklaces designed by John Galliano.
1/ 2 Napoleon III
The “Cannage” is inspired from the Napoleon III chair style from the private salons. this geometric pattern of squares and diagonals taken from the work of weaving the fiber plant is now Dior’s most iconic code, since its use on the Lady Dior bag in 1985 under the management of Sydney Toledano. Although it’s iconic status is thus fairly rece nt, This motif had already been used by Marc Bohan in 1961 on a dress.
1/ 3 The toile de Jouy
The first use of the Toile de Jouy in Dior’s universe was when Mr Dior asked the artist Christian Bédard who was a friend to imagine the design of one of his accessories boutiques. Christian Bédart chose to drape the walls in a cotton-inspired 18th century red "Toile de Jouy" on an ecru background. The toile de Jouy print is now regularly present throughout Dior’s collections.
