I have chosen this quotation because it is about inspiration: the different ways you can be inspired, the circumstances (where, when…), and the certainty that you will have THE idea. Carl Ally is here describing the creative man’s personality: his habits, his methods to find inspiration, his faith about it,… And it is a good example. In this essay, we will in the first place talk about the many methods you have to find the bright idea and in the second place we will see the circumstances of this inspiration.
What is the best way to find good ideas, good concepts and create the best ad? It is to be interested in lots of different topics: sport, literature, art, history, geography, movies, video games,… in order to have a base of culture. And this culture will help finding inspiration soon or later. That is why “the creative person wants to be a know-it-all” as Carl Ally once said: with this knowledge, the copy writer acquires a “real bank of ideas” which is necessary for this kind of job. With this bank, finding inspiration will be plain sailing! And the creative person is almost dead certain to succeed. But here, the advertising man is talking about “nineteenth-century mathematics, current manufacturing techniques, flower arranging, and hog futures”, those themes are absolutely different and strange. Indeed there are usual types of items you should learn in order to work in an advertising agency and those “kinds of things” are probably not one of them.
