DOING BUSINESS IN TAIWAN
SUMMER 2003
Welcome to Taiwan – the Silicon Island
Over the past few decades, Taiwan has transformed from a rural country with an agricultural economy to one of the world’s leading producers of semiconductors, computer goods and other high-technology products. Taiwan’s highly educated workforce and the continuous efforts of the government to create an investor-friendly environment, with free and fair competition for both local and international firms, through government loans, tax incentives and progressive legislation, have propelled Taiwan to the forefront of the East Asia region, as an economic powerhouse with abundant business and investment opportunities. Taiwan’s entrance into the WTO, in January of 2002, has served as a catalyst to the already dynamic process, encouraging further liberalization of the economy and further legal and regulatory changes to bring Taiwan into full compliance with international norms, making Taiwan a key player in the global economy. Taiwan’s overall competitiveness today ranks among the top ten countries in the world, and her potential for the future is great. In order to enjoy the great benefits Taiwan has to offer and to maximize investment returns, we encourage existing or potential investors to read through this general outline of Taiwan’s business and investment climate, and to please let us know if you have any questions or seek legal assistance in Taiwan.
