Edf's strategy
Inside the firm.
The Search and Development department of EDF is always trying to optimize the infrastructures in order to have a production more efficient. Of course, they are also looking for new technologies that will be more economic and/or be more close to their clients’ needs.
For instance in France, the clever use of technologies allows the electric production to be, for 95 per cent of it, not dependant of the hydrocarbons.
Outside the firm
EDF is the first producer of nuclear energy over the world. They are well implanted in Europe and they invest for a long term growth with three priorities:
1) Be a leader in the renewal of nuclear
With already 58 nuclear reactors in 19sites, they now want to settle some generators of the third generation in order to reduce the nuclear wastes. This permits to develop the local economy by creating many jobs, for example. A second third generation reactor has been planned to be built in France.
Here are the international projects of the firm: * USA: 4 third generation reactors, with 2 before 2020, in partnership with Constellation Energy. * UK: 4 third generation reactors, via the subsidiary of the group, British Energy. * China : 2 third generation reactors, as an investor and an operator, in partnership with CGNPC * Italy: 4 third generation reactors in partnership with the leader of the Italian leader in electric energy (Enel).
Before 2020, EDF has planned to invest in 20 third gen. reactors, that is to say either contribute to their construction, starting and/or exploitation. Of course, these projects may have some characteristics such as safety, profitability, with a good environment and it has of course to be accepted.
These projects are possible because of previous actions like the British Energy’s purchase (that is 8 more power stations), the purchase of half of the Constellation Energy’s (US) nuclear power stations, the intensification of the partnership between
