Internet ayant été popularisé par l'apparition du World Wide Web (WWW), les deux sont parfois confondus par le public non averti. Le World Wide Web n'est pourtant que l'une des applications d'Internet.
L'accès à Internet peut être obtenu grâce à un fournisseur d'accès à Internet via divers moyens de communication électronique : soit filaire (réseau téléphonique commuté (bas débit), ADSL, fibre optique jusqu'au domicile), soit sans fil (WiMAX, par satellite, 3G+). Un utilisateur d'Internet est désigné par le néologisme « internaute ».
Internet is the work of the US General Staff in 1969, in order to ensure the exchange of information between remote sites that can run without interruption. So then born on ARPANET. During the year 1970, the number of users from government and academic environment of the network increases. In 1980, various US research network are connected to others to form the NSF NET. In other countries, similar structures develop and grouping all these networks form online. From 1990 to 1992, the WWW (World Wide Web) was born and gives a new look to the internet.
Le terme d'origine américaine « Internet » est dérivé du concept d'internetting (en français : « interconnecter des réseaux ») dont la première utilisation documentée remonte à octobre 1972 par Robert E. Kahn1 au cours de la première ICCC (International Conference on Computer Communications) à Washington.
