Level 5 I have a dream: The “I have a dream” speech by Martin Luther King is one of the most influential speeches in all time. This speech is a masterpiece of rhetoric, King used metaphors to enhance the meaning of his speech and bring out the details. Those metaphors helped him to influence his listeners and to picture in their mind what he was saying. King said in his speech:”the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination”, by using this metaphor kings points out even though the Black people are free from the slavery , there are still discrimination and segregation against them. Just as the life of the black people is bound by the manacles of segregation and chains of discrimination, freedom is still limited in the American society. Kings used the term “manacles “to show that there is no freedom even if the slavery was abolished a hundred years earlier. When you have manacles and chains it means that your hands are attached and you cannot move as you wish. He tried to show that black people have no freedom; they cannot do what they want and go where they want. African people have to submit to the rules of the American society. Metaphor 2: Drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred: This is an illusion to the Bible. King used this metaphor to show that black people didn’t have to fight and used force and violence against white people because it would give the white people a reason to fight. By using this metaphor King wanted to say that their destiny and their freedom would not be left in the hands of others and they would be able to control their future. Metaphor 3: One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty and in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. By using this metaphor King
