In the novels studied, the object has rarely emerged as passive. Most of the times it is active. Sometimes in order to speak, sometimes in order to act. Sometimes its function is cardinal sometimes it has a function of catalysis but never is it absent as in the case of Grillet where the objects are self-sufficient, reduced to the «opacity of a visual resistance». In this sense Flaubert’s work constitute a stage towards the future.
