Dear Colleagues: December will mark an important step in the history of the PMI. It is true that for over 20 years, the PMI has worked for the development of standards that have became the world references in project management. The first cornerstone is the “Guide to the PMBOK”, which is the benchmark for the management of knowledge and processes in the field of project management. Later on, a baseline for the development of the manager abilities in project management was developed and published, the “Project Manager Competency Development Framework”. This framework offers to managers and organizations the tools to develop the skills and knowledge required to well-perform in our field. It is thus in next December that will be published the new maturity model for the management community, the “Organizational Project Management Maturity Model”, known by the acronym OPM3. The objective is to achieve, at the organizational level, what the “Guide to the PMBOK” accomplished in the field of project management. OPM3 will be the reference recognized worldwide for measuring organizational maturity. Of course, the maturity model is not a new concept and most of the project management maturity models are derived from the CMM (Capability Maturity Model). As such, the OPM3 is not an exception. Like all these previous models, it proposes a diagnostic and prognostic tool that helps determine the targeted level of maturity to be reached and identify the missing capabilities to bridge the gap. However, the OPM3 distinguishes itself from the other models by its adaptability to organizational environments into which it is implemented, whatever the organization size, the field, the disciplines involved or the business objectives are.
