THE DEATH PENALTY IN THE UNITED-STATES.

Death Penalty is a very large theme. It was quite difficult to synthesize beacuase there is so much to tell about it. Well, firstly I'm going to introduce the subject to you by telling you some History and statistics and illustrate the subject by giving a recent disputed case about the capital punishment.

As an introduction, I would like to begin by telling that the US stand for th 1st economic power in the world. The famous expression « land of freedom » is really well-konwn. What can be seen as a paradox is that, on the one hand US are one of the most democratical country in the world and on the other hand people in the land of the American dream still kill the criminals and moreover is quite popular. Currently 58 countries in the world and 69% americans are in favor of capital punishment. Maybe you know the death penalty was reaffirmed in 1976 with the United States Supreme Court's acceptance known under the name: Gregg V. Georgia. Whereas more&more countries tend to abolish it. As an example, death penalty was abolished in 1981 in France. Here I drew up a short list of the first ten states where executions are the most used. Actually, 8 states out of these ten states are in the South.

One of a recent case about this subject &stirred up heated debates was the death of Teresa Lewis (I don't know if you heard about this). Just for the record, this woman TL was sentenced for arranging the killings of her husband and a stepson over a $250,000 insurance payment. She was the first woman executed in the state in almost a century (since 1912 exactly) and the first woman executed in the country since 2005 and she was the 12th woman executed in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Even before this decision was stated 18 states along with the American federal government prohibited such executions.According to Robert Badinter, former French minister of Justice this procesus is
