The aim of this paper is to analyse a special type of copular sentences in Hungarian and in French. This type of sentence is based on two definite NPs where the subject NP is stressed in Hungarian and occupies the preverbal position reserved for the focus, whereas the predicate NP follows both the subject and the copula. In the corresponding
French sentence, however, the subject NP is distressed and occupies the canonical subject position. There is in this respect a discrepancy between the information structures of the two languages, since the Hungarian sentences have a focuspresupposition structure in opposition to the French equivalents that have a classical topic-comment articulation. We show that the uniqueness condition related to the predicate of these structures allows for (or in some cases imposes) the use of a complex information structure in Hungarian which is a combination of topic-comment and focuspresupposition articulation, whereas this possibility is open only for the colloquial variety of French and in a limited way.
0. Introduction
Chaque langue a son outillage syntaxique et prosodique qui lui permet d’encoder de manière systématique des concepts pragmatiques relevant de la structuration informationnelle de l’énoncé. En dépit des différences structurales fondamentales qui séparent le français et le hongrois, on peut s’attendre à ce que les constructions analogues se voient plus ou moins régulièrement associer des mécanismes analogues d’encodage des informations contextuelles dans les deux langues.
Dans cette étude, consacrée aux structures copulatives, nous cherchons à montrer qu’il existe pourtant, dans ce domaine, des asymétries remarquables entre le français et le hongrois sur le plan de la structure informationnelle.
