Many authors have written about the beauty of their surroundings. Literature does not know a shortage of bursting descriptions of natures or even of urban landscapes. But few of these works have a dimension comparable to the Helen Keller's essay. It portrays certain emotions and observations she makes such as "the seeing see little" (824). After a conversation with a friend of hers,she notes that in fact her seeing friends or the seeing people in general do not see much. They do not observe their environment, they do not appreciate what is in their environ. The seeing see but do not observe. If I were to direct a one-day workshop which aim is to help the students open their eyes on what surrounds them , I would choose to show them the Eiffel Tower.The Eiffel Tower is probably one of the most recognizable buildings in the world. If you were to show a picture of the Eiffel Tower to anyone, they could tell you what it is. But the Eiffel Tower is not just a building in Paris. The focus would not only be on the aesthetic beauty of this monument but would also include the architectural ingenuity and the historical context.
To start the day, I will firstly make a particular choice of my students. According to Helen Keller the seeing see little, but as regards to the Eiffel Tower, some seeings actually see. Most people living outside Paris always appreciate the monument or at least pay attention to it.I would want all my students to be Parisians or French living in Paris. I will make this choice of students because as I said previously the Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular monuments, but almost exclusively for the foreigners and unfortunately goes unappreciated by the Parisians, and I was once one of them. Indeed, most Parisians who have the opportunity to admire this monument never take the time to do so.
