Act 1
Scene 1:
The ghost of the dead king, father of Hamlet, appeared to the soldiers and to Horatio who thought first it was fantasy from soldiers.
The ghost don’t speak to them, they decided to tell Hamlet about its apparition.
Scene 2:
Hamlet mourn his father (like Gilgamesh and Achilles mourn their friends)
“all that lives must die” p1790: hamlet angry at his mother who committed according to him incest marrying his uncle. (demonization of the queen)
Laertes came to ask the permission to return to France.
Horatio tell Hamlet about the specter or ghost of his father.
Scene 3:
The brother and the father told Ophelia to not trust Hamlet confession and affection. She is weak and submissive.
Scene 4+ scene 5:
Ghost talk to Hamlet and confess that a snake (his uncle) killed him and should stop the incestuous act of his uncle and his mother married and sharing the same bed.
The swear that they won’t talk about what happened.
Act II
Scene 1
Ophelia comes to her dad and confess what Hamlet did: no personal judgment, no personal opinion nor personality. Her dad tells her what to do and she obeys ignoring her feelings and her thoughts. She is submissive.
Scene 2
Absence of women: Hecuba wife of Priam vs. Queen Gertrude
What Hamlet does:
1. Mourns his dad (mourns of Achilles and Gilgamesh)
2. play fool, mad and crazy
3. play the Gonzalo dead to observe his Uncle reaction.
Act III
Scene 1
Meeting of Hamlet and Ophelia: rich concerning the women portrait made by Hamlet: all women are like his mother. Pure women do not exist and women should shut themselves in nunnery to not transform men into monsters. According to Hamlet his mother is the cause of his dad murder. “God hath given you one face and you make yourself another…”
For Hamlet his mother committed adultery and incest.
Scene 2
Ophelia sexual object for Hamlet: doesn’t respect her
He is angry at his mother who dressed up and didn’t mourn his father
