Jonathan Swift est né à Dublin en le 30 novembre 1667. Il était orphelin de père et ses oncles pourvurent à son éducation. Après une formation universitaire à Dublin (1681-1688), il quitte l'Irlande et va rejoindre sa mère établie dans le comté de Leicester. Il devient secrétaire de William Temple, homme d'état importante de l'époque, membre du Parlement et diplomate très en vue. Swift vécut dix ans chez ce protecteur.
