Gayety

En 1956, il participe au Stratford Shakespearean Festival (Ontario). Il y joue le rôle du Dr. Caius, dans The Merry Wives of Windsor et celui de Charles VI dans Henri V, avec Christopher Plummer. Après avoir acheté l'immeuble de l'ancien Théâtre Gayety à Jean Grimaldi en 1956, Gratien Gélinas le rénove et inaugure la Comédie-Canadienne en 1958. Il souhaitait par ce geste fonder un théâtre qui se donnerait comme mission première de contribuer, par la création d'œuvres canadiennes françaises, à l'établissement
