Three women, three lives, three times .. All Michael Cunningham’s novel is about these three women. They don ‘t seem to have a link : the temporal and geographical gap which separates them appears as too big. However, Virginia Woolf, Laura Brown and Clarissa Vaughan are indeed linked by an imaginary woman : Mrs. Dalloway, a Virginia Woolf’s novel character. The Hours describes the stories of the three ladies, magnificently intertwined by the 1999 Pulitzer price winner. One of the three main character is Laura Brown. She is a young suburban wife and lives in the 1950’s Los Angeles. Laura is a fragile person, who finds a refuge in books, especially in Mrs. Dalloway, the book she is reading while we discover her .. The first 10 pages let us know many informations about her : quickly, we will look at the physical description. Then, we will look into her personal history, in order to define who she is. This will drice us to this question : « how does the narrator present her thoughts and how does he describe her relationships with others? » .

Laura Zielski, married to Dan Brown, is a 1950’s suburban woman. She lives near to Los angeles, with her 4years-old son Richie and her husband in « a house in which no one but they have ever lived ». She is expecting a second baby, as the narrator tells us page 44 : « she is a young mother, pregnant with another child ». However, the latter precise that « the only manifestation are a certain squeamishness and a subtle but distinct inner churning. » Therefore, we can imagine that we don’t see yet her pregnant-woman belly. Several times, the narrator mentions the fact she wears a robe, which means she is pretty feminine, like lots of women during the 40’s. We also learn she has « thick and dark hair », which gives her a little mysterious and scary aspect. This information announce the following one.
