Abraham Stoker mostly known as Bram Stoker, was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1847. In 1897, he published the novel which makes him famous Dracula .

Vampire’s Theme

1.1) Count Dracula is an invention of Stoker, inspired from The Prince of Wallachia, Vlad Tepes or Vlad The Impaler. He was a brilliant and notoriously savage general who impaled his enemies on long spikes. The prince also had a reputation for murdering beggars and forcing women to eat their babies. His father was called Vlad Dracul. Dracul comes from « draco » in latin meaning « snake », « dragon » but in Romanian it means “devil”.
The Dracula family is described with pride in the early chapters of the novel.
This historical allusion gives Dracula a semblance of truth, and, as the Author’s Note, Stoker wants to suggest that the documents assembled in the novel are real.
Though Dracula is not the first novel of a vampire. John William Polidori, an italian and english writer is the author of the short story “The Vampyre” published in 1819, where Lord Ruthven, the protagonist is the first vampire of the literature. However, Bram Stocker is the first to mention the fact that Dracula can’t reflect himself in mirrors, and the transformation into animals.

1.2) Dracula is a collage, a multi-voiced novel. It’s a mass of documents, points of view… Each chapter matches to an extract of a Journal, letter, or a telegram…This particularity gives it a part of truth and authenticity. It’s looks more official. Characters are:
• Jonathan Harker :Young solicitor who works for Mr Hawkins.

• Wilhelmina "Mina Murray" Harker : young schoolmistress, fiancee of Jonathan Harker.
