ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank all the people who encouraged me and believed in me during this past year. Their support was precious and most welcome.
I especially thank Dr. Christopher Bains for his help, his comments and his advice. He enabled me to improve my knowledge of the subject, to develop my thoughts and he guided me efficiently in the writing of this thesis. I appreciate his expertise and skills and he was always here for me when I needed him. I deeply thank him for his patience and his kindness.
I would like to thank all my professors whose lessons I will not forget. Their mastery of their subject and their willingness to share their ideas, their immense culture and experience at the academic level must be remarked. They broadened my mind and invited me to reevaluate my conception of the artistic and human world. I wish to express my gratitude to Dr. Price, Dr. Gafaiti and Dr. Edwards for this gift of knowledge. I have a special thought for M. Théveny, who was my teacher in elementary school, Mrs Raoult and Mrs Janin, in collège and lycée who inspired in me a taste for literature.
I do not forget my dear family, my parents Jean-Philippe and Anne-Marie, my siblings Aurore, Élie, and Mathis, who supported me and encouraged me when I needed them. Loin des yeux, près du cœur. I am grateful to my friends, especially Koyuki Mitani,
Clément Duval, Thomas Bourbon, Iboo Tall, and many other companions so numerous that I cannot mention all their names: they are always extremely valuable
