In the short story, 'Eveline, James Joyce introduces us to the life of a young woman named Eveline. In fact doesn’t like her life without a sense and freedom but one day she has the opportunity to escape with Frank, the man she thinks she loves, to a faraway country in search of a new life. Instead, she decides to stay in the dreary and gloomy life she already knows. To understand Eveline's final decision to stay we have to analyze the reasons and the motivations who push Eveline to have a better life. Next we will see her fear of the unknown; the fact that she does not know Frank well enough and her paralysis by fear, finally we will see the many attachments that she has to her home and her commitment back her mother, prompt Eveline to make her decision.
I Eveline wants a better life The life of Eveline is a routine and she is frustrated. Routine affects Eveline who face difficults situations. The most consequences of following mundane routines are unrequited love. Eveline, in the story that shares her name, gives up her chance at love by choosing her familiar life over an unknown adventure, even though her familiar routines are tinged with sadness and abuse. In fact Eveline wants to life and she doesn’t want to have the same future of her mother: the death. In fact throughout the story, Eveline is faced with a few good memories of her past from her childhood and her mother, but she also faces the horrible flashbacks of her mother’s illness and her father’s violence. Moreover she has a bad life and was given the chance to leave with someone who was seemingly the man of her dreams. He was nice to her, took her places, and treated her like a queen. He was a true gentleman; she was never treated so nicely ever before. Her upbringing was from a strict Roman Catholic Irish family whose mother had passed away in her childhood.
