Résumé
Sur l’histoire du terme polysémie. 1 : Genèse(s) du concept
Relire l’histoire primitive d’une discipline scientifique permet de mieux saisir les conceptions qui s’y sont développées. Nous examinons dans cet article la genèse d’un concept-clé de la linguistique, auquel l’assyriologue J. Halévy donna le nom de polysémie dans les années 1870. La polysémie fait partie des concepts originaires de la nouvelle « science des significations » telle que la conçoit M. Bréal (le terme figure dans ses écrits à la fin des années 1880). S’il n’a pas été l’inventeur du concept, Bréal a très certainement contribué à en faire la promotion, grâce notamment au succès de son Essai de sémantique (1897). Inscrivant la polysémie dans la tradition historico-linguistique, Bréal poursuit et approfondit la réflexion de son contemporain A. Darmesteter.
Le présent article a pour but de restituer le contexte intellectuel et théorique de création du concept, en mettant au jour les conditions premières de son invention.

Abstract
The history of polysémie. 1 : The emergence of a concept
Examining the earliest history of a scientific discipline may help in better understanding how its theoretical frameworks have developed over time. The purpose of this article is to shed new light on the intellectual and theoretical context in which a major concept in linguistics was created. This concept, termed polysémie by the assyriologist J. Halévy in the 1870s, is one of the first concepts defined in the emerging “science of meaning” elaborated by M. Bréal, the author who introduced the term sémantique into linguistics. Although Bréal did not invent the concept of polysemy, he contributed to its diffusion through the success of his Essai de sémantique, which was translated into English – soon after its original publication – as Semantics: Studies in the science of
