Fashion, in teenagers’ lives, is important. What the others think about us is based, firstly, on our appearance, so the clothes we wear.
The first impression is visual. The way we are dressed can show some pieces of personality, of social behaviour.
For a few years, fashion is more and more important, because of the influence of the Medias. Thirty years ago, the teenagers used to identify themselves to famous actors but nowadays, models are became unavoidable.
Fashion is an old concept but it’s really present only for some years. Nowadays, the word “fashion” is associated to the big place granted to clothes. A lot of researchers try to understand what place has clothes, and why is it so important.

I . Fashion and teenagers 1 . Generalities Clothes are a symbol, and carry on many senses.
The first role of clothes is to differenciate men and women, at first sight. Historicaly talking, men and women had to wear different clothes. For example, a man doesn’t wear dresses or skirts. But, nowadays, it’s not rare to find young people who won’t hesitate to cultivate their taste for androgynous style. More and more clothes could be worn by both men and women.
Clothes aren’t neuter. Colors, forms, material, patterns vary from style to style. Each one of these mean something differents. For example, a jogging suit hasn’t the same meaning if it’s worn in the street or in a sport arena.

2 . Expansion of new styles With the passing of the year, the way teenagers are dressed is evoluating.
At present, we hear a lot about characteristic styles of teenagers like gothic or, more recently, emo and tecktonik.
We chose to talk about Emo. We found a website created by “emo guys” and “emo girls” (that’s how they introduce themselves). They describe their movement as a state of mind.
