The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the resultof fi ne engineering – always setting standards, as it is based on much more than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW Effi cientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in the completely emission-free BMW 7 Series saloons, and the BMW ActiveHybrid – an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. And every BMW alreadyincludes the multi-award-winning BMW Effi cientDynamics technology package as standard that boosts dynamics even further whilst simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Electric Power Steering Unlike conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy while steering is actually taking place. When the steering wheelposition is constant – for example at high speed along the motorway – the electric motor is inactive.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology This innovative exhaust gas turbo charger effi ciently recaptures the energy present in exhaust through the use of two chargers (Z4 3 5 i and Z4 sDrive3 5 is).

Optimum Shift Indicator Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel.This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator in conjunction with sixspeed manual transmission comes in. It shows the driver what gear to use in order to drive more effi ciently.

Thanks to the innovative features of Effi cientDynamics, BMW has been able to signifi cantly reduce CO emissions in many models. But that’s just for starters. We’re carrying on our research with Effi cientDynamics – in thequest to bring you more driving pleasure and less emissions. Brake Energy Regeneration To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver either takes their foot off the accelerator or the brake –previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance While driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use specialmaterials for their road treads and side walls, thus reducing deformation. Lightweight construction Our engineers use aluminium where lighter materials are more expedient, for instance in the front section or for the suspension, in the bonnet and in the hardtop. The six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, for instance, is composed of aluminium and magnesium. Making these engines the lightest in theirclass. These weight savings lead to lower fuel consumption and better axle load distribution, for more agility, especially in bends.
