Le Big Ben est le surnom de la grande cloche de 13,5 tonnes installée dans la Clock Tower du palais de Westminster, the Houses of Parlement à Londres.
Seuls les habitants britanniques peuvent visiter Big Ben.
Big Ben a été construit parce qu’un incendie a dévasté le bâtiment du parlement en 1835. Après cet accident, une commission est mise en place pour choisir le nouveau style du bâtiment. Le gagnant est Charles Barry qui a choisit d’intégrer un clocher au bâtiment.
La première cloche est installée en 1856 mais quelques mois après, elle se fend suite à son installation. La seconde cloche est installée le 8 mai 1859 et mise en service. Chaque année elle est réglée si elle avance ou si elle recule

La hauteur de la tour mesure 315 feets
Pour atteindre le beffroi, les visiteurs doivent monter 335 marches.
Le mécanisme de l’horloge pèse 11 000 pounds et le marteau 440.
Quand le Parlement se réunit, la lumière s’allume.
Le Big Ben annonce dans tous les foyers anglais le début de la nouvelle année. Le son est retransmis sur toutes les chaînes de télévision et de radio du pays.

On the night of the 16th of October, 1834 the old Palace of Westminster was destroyed by fire. Following the destruction of the buildings, a competition was launched for design suitable for the new Palace. Charles Barry's design won. Charles Barry's design incorporated a clock tower. Barry invited Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy, a clockmaker of reputation, to submit a design and price for constructing such a clock. In 1854 the mechanism was ready to be installed in the tower but this was not possible as the tower was incomplete. After the installation of the clock, it splits a few months after its installation because the hammer was too heavy. The name 'Big Ben' was first applied to the original hour bell cast by Warners. There is no firm evidence of the origin of this name, but it may have derived from Sir Benjamin Hall,
