The Plantagenets 1327-1377
It's a hero of a national feeling. Edward III of the Plantagenets family was king in the Middle Age (The Norman Conquest, Magna Carta, Hundred Year War, the war of the Roses, Feudalism, king ship and church). This period is one of the most glorious in UK history. Edward appeared as the most powerful monarch in Europe and his court as the most brilliant in the Christendom. It's when the England began to see themselves as one nation and a unique leadership, which gave birth to national feeling among the population. It was during this time there was the famous Hundred Year War between the French and the English from 1337 to 1453. The symbol of Anglo­French enmity. The official language change from French to English in 1362. This change of the language created a huge difference between the kingdom of France and the kingdom of England. In fact, the 100 year war wasn't really of 100 year war, a solid battle. The phrase of the 100 year war was invented after the event by historian to describe 116 years of conflicts. The 100 year war was split in 4 periods : 1­ The Edwardian war. ­­> The victory of Edward III against Philippe VI of France. The war stopped for 9 years with a humiliating peace treaty for France. 2­ The Caroline war that lasted 20 years from 1369 to 1389. Again, it was Edward III against Charles V of France. 3­ The Lancastrian war. ­­> Henry V of England invaded Normandy in 1415 with “Joan of Arc”. 4­ The last period of time was with the final departure of English invaders. The conflict stopped with the victory of the kingdom of France over UK. The outcome of all this led to the independent state of France and UK being born. As before, the 2 kingdoms used to have connections. The story of “Joan of Arc” become a negative symbol in the history Anglo­French relation.
