Example of a GAZETTE ARTS CRITIC
In this National theatre play adaptation of Mary Shelley’s most popular novel, Nick Dear and Danny Boyle have definitely done a fantastic job. Indeed, their hard work has certainly paid off because we see the efforts they have put in this adaptation with all the details that are in it.
The thing that is certainly the most enjoyable is the fact that the production is shown live in other theatres. This way, this outstanding and terrifying play can be admired all over the World and it makes everyone feel privileged to be sitting and watching it in Canada when you know the action is shown in the U.K. In addition, it makes the viewer even more able of seeing every important detail, because it is filmed to make sure no one misses a thing.
In addition, the way the director and producer chose the actors surely shows that they are very experienced in that field. The exchange of roles between Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller seems perfect! They both complete each other because they know what the other one has to play and the emotions he has to get through. They simply play perfectly the role that is given to them! [pic]
Another stunning fact about this play adaptation of Frankenstein is the attention paid into the making of every stage set. The settings are so well done that the watcher doesn’t feel like he’s watching a piece, it is as if he was part of it too; it’s an amazing feeling.
The biggest lack is certainly the fact that it doesn’t suit perfectly to the novel: there is no beginning! The viewer who has never read the book can be totally lost because he doesn’t see the contextualization. The play begins with the creation of the monster, but the person who doesn’t know the story of Frankenstein.
In conclusion, even if the adaptation is not totally complete, the story is well presented and the characters are perfectly played
