Geopolitical Arguments: the example of TURKEY

Firstable, a country which desire is to form part of the European Union must be a liberal democracy. The first condition is obviously to respect entirely the Human Rights. Some candidates countries don’t implement that.

In Turkey for example mass media are always partially controlled by the government itself controlled by the army.

Moreover the disparities between men and women are very strong. In spite of a theoretical balance rights between the men and the women, the Turkish women are even subjected today to an inferior position within their family and are far from having acquired a status equal to the men and even less the egalitarian distribution of power. It is not the laws which is lacking, but their real applications in the daily life of the women. The goodwill of the Government to insert Community knowledge is not enough; it must be translated by lasting and concrete measurements.

There still remain discriminations towards the Kurdish minority and the Armenian massacre isn’t totally recognized.

So there is a long way to go before Turkey could be associated with a Human Rights country.

In 2020 Turkey will have a population of 100 billions of inhabitants. It means that it will be the country with the more important place in the Parliament if the candidacy is being accepted. Moreover, even if Europe borders are conventional 95% of the territory remains part to Asia.

So, why we should extend European Union over countries which have not the same culture and values? We’d better wait until they have a stable political democracy as we wait Spain and Portugal in 1986 because they were under dictatorship.
