Evolution of the Company: First, we will study the evolution of the company. This enterprise was created by Mark Zuckerberg, an American student at Harvard University. In the beginning, it wasn’t the facebook we know today. He designed its predecessor, ‘Facemash,’ on October 28, 2003.While at Harvard he created a website called “hot or not,” where the men had to do comparisons between two girls at the university and determine who was the most hot. For that he used private photos of the girls and asked nine houses at the university who was the “hotter” person. After, we will see the beginning of the facebook we now know. This website had a mission to allow the students of theuniversity to share with each other the various photos taken during the year. The website was officially named “thefacebook.com” on February 4th, 2004, and facebook became an immediate success. During this month, morethan half of the students at Harvard created a profile on the site and could make links between their friends from classes and even contact other students at the university. After seeingthe big interest shown by people, Zuckerberg decided to surround himself with various persons to promote the site and make it the most attractive possible. In March of 2004 he decided to spread his social network and allow website access to the students at Yale, Stanford, and Columbia Universities. Gradually, this website was opened almost everywhere to Universities throughout Canada and the UnitedStates. It was in 2005 that Zuckerberg decided to invest $200,000 in the purchase of the name Facebook. In September 2005 Facebook expanded its users and created a version of their website for high school students. After that facebook widened to even more clientele by inviting companies to join on the site, like Microsoft and Apple. Finally, on Septemeber 26, 2006 Zuckerberg opened his website tothe general public. And for this day, it became the most popular networking site on the planet! 200,000,000 users joined the network in less than three years. This student creator is now the youngest billionaire in the world. In order to see the full evolution of the company, we have to also study the revenues. In the year 2006 there were $52 million; In 2007 - $150 million; In 2008 - $280million; In 2009 - $775 million; 2010 - $2 billion. A real growth every year, as in 2006-07 where there was a growth of 188%.

Presentation of the Website: Now we will look at the different functions of facebook. The first is to be able to keep in touch with friends, and make others. Users can send private or public messages, stay posted about what others are doing through statuses, newsupdates, etc. It’s possible to look for contacts via the internal search engine, join groups of users, and more. Users can also share photos and videos, publish notes, blogs, and links, and organize evenings and events. In addition to these functions, it’s also possible to collect useful applications and games, like zombies, and express opinions with the “I like” button. This helps strengthen the bondsof friendship and the interactivity of the network.Facebook is also the first site for sharing photos (14 million / day). 50% of the members come onto Facebook at least 1 time every day for an average of 20 minutes of different consultations.

The Competitors: Before explaining Facebook’s place in the market, we must do a presentation of the others: -Viadeo is aprofessional social network created by Dan Serfatyl and Thierry Lunati. Although first only in France, Viadeo strongly developed today on the international stage, particularly in Europe and in emerging countries.
