The article we will discuss is called « My son's experience in a French school was not a good one ». This is a testimony of Emily Barr, an author who is also an occasional journalist.
This woman testified in The Guardian following the release of the book by Peter Gumbel «L'école casse-t-elle nos enfants». Gumbel is an english journalist, who lives in Paris since 2002. He wrote a book on education, about the school in France.
Emily Barr wished to testify because she lived in France during five years. Her son was sent in a French School. The book of Gumbel lays bare the inadequacies of the french education system and for Emily Barr, when she read the book, she said «I felt sick with recognition ».
In this article, Emily Barr defends the secular French education system as well as free school. Compared to the English system where inequality is still substantial, France is ahead.
But for Emily Barr, the french system has many gaps, including, she believes that learning is archaic and she notes that many french pupils are stresses and are failure.
In conclusion, at the end of his testimony on the schooling of his son in France, Emily Barr thinks if « French Schools could become less rigid, and if British schools could be more consistent, then we might all be on to something ».
So, need a system may be more unequal, but with diverse lessons or a system including evryone but who is more stressful and inflexible
