Abstract. By a law of 1 December 2008, France replaced two of its nine income maintenance schemes, revenu minimum d'insertion (RMI) and allocation de parent isolé (API), by a new one, revenu de solidarité active (RSA), which became effective on 1 June 2009. It is designed to help the beneficiaries by inciting them to take up a job and it is specially oriented towards the working poor. The paper is a brief summing up of the reform. It claims that RSA corrects the earlier schemes, which were defective, but that it was more ambitiously expected to bring unity to the whole system of income maintenance and that this part of the reform is still to be undertaken. A document intended for general presentation is appended to the paper. It adds numerical data and makes it clear that the number of beneficiaries of RSA in 2008-2009
