Good morning everybody and welcome.
Today, i would like to outline the Ray Ban brand.
Actually, this a brand kown and worn by everbody that’s why i wanted to understand the phenomenon and its success.
I have divided my presentation into 2 parts. First, i will explain the history and the origin of the brand name, and finally i will speak about the different components that led them to success.
HISTORY
Ray Ban is a manufacturer of sunglasses founded in 1937 by a German optician, John Jacob Bausch & an American optician Henry Lomb.
The story begins in 1853 when Bausch landed in The United States and met Lomb : Together, they decided to establish their own company named « Bausch & Lomb ». At the begining, they manufactured telescopes and binoculars that they sold to specific firms as the US Navy.
Few years later, advances in medecine permit to carry out detailed and meticulous exams inside eyes. Therefore, they will take advantage of the situation to go into the optical glass business : from that moment, they are going to become a reference in the manufacture of sunglasses.
Indeed, in 1921, they launched their first model of Aviator which was only designed for the US Air Force because the American Army wanted to equip pilots with better goggles.
Besides, In 1930, in response to the demand of the Lieutenant John MacCready who was returned from a balloon flying adventure and complained that the sun had permanently damaged his eyes, « Bausch & Lomb » created sunglasses that would provide protection and also look elegant. Thus on May, they elaborated a new prototype, known as Anti-Glare, which had an extremely light frame weighting 150 grams. They were made of gold-plated metal with green lenses made of mineral glass to filter out infrared and ultraviolet rays.
