Overview of the training ship For my forth’s year internship, I worked during two months and half in a laboratory at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio, USA. The aim of this internship is not only to comprehend human relationships in a professional structure, but also take part in scientific project and assume responsibilities in a work team. The subject of my internship is to add an electro-mechanical system in the set-up of the experiment. The experiment consists in putting two fluids with different density in a cell. The cell contains two magnetic wires in each side. The initialization of the experiment depend on the shape of the wires (the length, diameter…) In addition the more dense fluid has to be magnetic. Thanks to a magnetic field they place the heavier fluid above the second one. When this field is shutting down, a Rayleigh-Taylor instability (this is the subject of their researches) occurs : the two fluids try to reach their usual balance. When they run through each other, the interface between them follows the Rayleigh-Taylor instability comportment. However, The video obtained from this experiment is not so clear. The wires obstruct a part of what is happening and they may interfere with the magnet field. So my mission was to find a way to get away the wires in a very short time after shutting off the magnet. In this report I’ll describe the laboratory I worked at, and then I’ll detail the scientific experiment and at the end I’ll highlight the results of my work during this two months and half. To conclude with this short presentation, I have to thank all the people who helped me during this internship. Not only for their help, but also for all the things I learned with them technically and socially.
