Abstract This article risks the attempt to move the discussion of culture and tourism onto a broader basis. It replaces a rigid conception of culture with a dynamic model and starts from a framing premise of empathy rather than cultural pessimism. It uses an extended explanatory model of tourism to seek answers to two central questions: what functions does travel fulfill for the travelers' culture and what effects can tourism have on hosts culture? The report demonstrates that the ritual, utopian and mythical character of travel makes a significant contribution to satisfying the basic human needs for security, activity and pluralism. In this way the holiday culture that has developed in the western countries has come to assume a vital role in strengthening cultural identity.
Le rapport prouve que les charactéristiques rituelles, utopiques et mythiques du tourisme contribuent à satisfaire des besoins humaines dans la domaine de la sécurité, de l'activité et le pluralisme. De cette manière, il est juste de prétendre que la culture touristique joue un rôle vital au niveau du renforcement de l'identité culturelle.

Zusammenfassung Dieser Artikel versucht die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Kultur und Tourismus auf eine breitere Grundlage zu stellen. Er ersetzt den engen Kulturbegriff durch ein dynamisches Modell und geht eher von mehr Einfühlungsvermögen als von Kulturpessimismus aus. Er stützt sich auf eine erweitertes Erklärungsmodell des Tourismus. Dabei stehen zwei zentrale Fragen im Vordergrund: Welche Funktion hat der Tourismus für die Reisekultur? Welche Auswirkungen hat er für die ortsansässige Kultur? Der
