I have spent my internship at the « hopital privé de Marne la Vallée » in the maternity service during ten weeks. It is a new hospital that opened less than a year ago. It arise from the merger of two clinics. I worked three days a week during twelve hours (7:30 am to 7:30 pm). The maternity service has 25 beds but they were never all used. Usually we had between ten and twenty patients. In the service there are one midwife or one nurse, one auxiliary nurse, one auxiliary paediatric nurse, one paediatrician, one gynaecologist and several trainees. I live far away from the hospital so I had to woke up at 4:45 am and leave house at 5:45 am. I had to take the subway, then the suburb train and then a bus. The journey lasted one hour and a half. I arrived at the hospital at 7:15 am so I had the time to put on my professional clothes and get ready for my day. At 7:30 am the team changes and the night nurse updates the midwife about what happened during the night. After that we did the visits in every patient’s rooms to take the temperature and the blood pressure and to distribute the medicines ( usually: dolipran = painkiller, profenid and bromok-in to stop the milk rising). We also had to examine each patient who had an episiotomy (a perineum section in order to ease the baby's way out). In this service there is not many technical gesture so the main occupation is to give emotional support to patients and their families. We also have to teach mothers how to take care of their new born children and of themselves. Later in the morning, the gynaecologist passes in each room to answer questions of patients and also to check if everything is ok. Usually the midwife or the nurse stays with him because they have done the follow up of the patients. We had to keep watch over how they were urinating, farting and have bowel movements.
