ULYSSE FROM BAGDAD D’ÉRIC-EMMANUEL SCHMITT ou l’épopée d’un clandestin

Bagdad (2008) qui a comme point de départ l’Irak. Saad, jeune héros du roman, est poussé par sa mère a quitté son pays à la recherche d’une vie meilleure. Son exil est retracé tout au long de l’œuvre et le personnage traversera différents pays avant d’arriver à Londres. Nous analyserons les aspects liés à la clandestinité et à l’exil. Nous aborderons également la notion d’identité et d’altérité. Nous nous questionnerons sur les relations intertextuelles et nous interrogerons plus précisément sur la référence à l’épopée d’Homère. Nous verrons qu’à l’inverse d’Ulysse, Saad ne cherche pas à rentrer chez lui mais à trouver un chez-soi ailleurs que dans son pays natal. Il s’agit à tous points de vue d’un parcours initiatique mais également d’une quête identitaire.

Abstract: We propose to analyze Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s novel, Ulysse from Bagdad (2008) that uses Iraq as a starting point. Saad, the young hero of the novel, is pushed by his mother to leave his country in search of a better life. His exile is tracked throughout the novel and the character passes by various countries before arriving in London. We will analyze the aspects of clandestinity and exile. We will also discuss the notion of identity and otherness. We are going to take a look at the question of intertextuality and more specifically examine the reference to
Homer’s epic. Continuing our analysis, unlike Ulysses, Saad does not try to go home, instead he finds a home elsewhere and not in his native country. All of these issues point to a journey of initiation but also to a quest for identity.
