BLACK AND WHITE

I / Nature of document :

This document is an except from the novel Crv Freedom, written by John Briley and published in 1987.

II / Description :

A) The photo :
This is a South African, township. There are shanties on either side of the road. There are also a lot of people outside. These people look idle, they must be unemployed. The whole picture reminds us of a township where poor,black families live below the poverty line, possibly without the bare necessities of life. There seems to be a lot of rubbish / fragments of stone in the middle of the road, which underlines the fact that this is a poor neighbourhood.

B) The title :
The title thanks to the word « and » insists on the fact that there seem to be no hard feelings between Blacks and Whites. They are symbolically linked together. The introduction reinforces the idea that Blacks and Whites can live in harmony.

C) The text :
Although Tenjy and her family have endured years of hardship because of the apartheid regime, she has no grudge against the white community. She reckons that the whites have given the world many good things. Yet, she also insists on the fact that the black community also has a key role to play in the development of her country. The blacks may contribute to the development of South Africa too.

III / Interpret the document :

The atmosphere is rather friendly. Donald Woods has been invited to the township by his black friend Steve Biko and he is there as a journalist to witness the situation the black community is in.
