Le terme brownie a fait référence à plusieurs pâtisseries au cours de son évolution. Certains racontent que le brownie tel qu’on le connaît aujourd’hui aurait été inventé par un chef américain en 1893, alors que d’autres disent plutôt qu’il s’agirait d’une création d’une résidente de Nouvelle-Angleterre qui aurait par mégarde omis d’ajouter de la levure chimique à son gâteau. Pour rendre la présentation de ce gâteau plat plus agréable à l’œil, elle aurait eu l’idée de le couper en morceaux pour le servir.
Quoi qu’il en soit, la première recette moderne du brownie remonterait à 1906.
