ENGLISH ESSAY

Topic : “ Dracula “ is a film in the horror-fantasy genre. Discuss why we may find such film interesting, referring to this film to support your ideas.

The story of Dracula as been written in the 1890's by Bram Stokers, an Irish writer. This fantasy and scaring story which mix love and horror fascinated the whole word that's why it was rehabilitated by many films producers. In class, we worked on Coppola's version of the film and we are going to see in which ways this film in the horror-fantasy genre is interesting to watch and study.

Humans have always been fascinated by supernatural in all its forms. Fascination for vampires goes back to a long way, many centuries before Christ. Moreover, human appearance of vampires permits more scenarios related to humans, thus using humans feelings is easier and love stories are possible. Despite this very realistic aspect of vampires, the film Dracula is above all in the horror-fantasy genre. This unrealistic way of the story allows us to dream and cut off from reality ; everybody has already dream of a supernatural power which could allow us to fly or turn into animal like count Dracula in the film when he turns into a wolf or turns invisible. After watching the film we could even believe in the existence of vampires in far and isolated places. Why not ?
The means used in realisation of fantasy films often make these films impressive because of the special effects and the extravagant sets. Dracula's castle for example is very impressive because of its height and all the special effects that make it dark and obscure. The horror is also omnipresent in the film and permits to keep spectators in suspense. Dracula can be grasped as a sensible man but also as a blood-thirsty monster so during the whole film we are waiting for the decisive element which will tip the scales in one or the other solution. Another possible reason of spectators' attraction for the horror scenes of the film could be the
