His life: Nicolas Copernicus, today known as the man who discovered the real organization of the universe, was born on the 19th of February 1473 in Poland. He came from a humble family, but in spite of that, he had a very good education and studied in the best schools and universities. He travelled a bit for his studies, that’s why in 1497, he came in Bologna where he lived at Domenico Maria de Novara’s home (who was a mathematics professor but also one of the most influent people for Copernicus). Indeed, very quickly, the young Polish was interested by geography and astronomy and decided to follow the way of his host, who was one of the first who reappraised the exactness of the works in geography made by the astronomer Ptolemy. He saw with him his first occultation of a star (a short disappearance of light), solar eclipses … Afterwards, when he finished his studies; he built an observatory in Frombork where he began his searches about astronomy. He was a very intelligent man who spoke Latin, German, Polish, Greek and Italian and his career really began at that time! Indeed after that, he published his first book and wrote a particular treatise called “Commentariolus” which mentioned the heliocentric model while all the people thought that the universe functioned around the Earth (which is the geocentric model, the organization of the universe that was chosen by Ptolemy). Unfortunately, the Church didn’t believe him and sentenced him, but this new idea had a very important impact, in particular on the scientists, because all the convictions that had the people were blamed. From 1512 to 1513, the year of his death, he did important things like participate to the Fifth Council of the Lateran … After his death Galileo and Kepler continued to be interested about the heliocentric model. Finally, thanks to perseverance, a long time and different others theories after, his first theory was totally accepted, in particular thanks to Isaac Newton.
