Si les premières expériences de « télévision » ont eu lieu pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, les postes de télévision ne commencent à être installés dans les foyers américains qu’après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.3 En 1944 se mettent en place quatre réseaux privés de télévision hertzienne : ABC, CBS, NBC et DuMont (qui disparaît en 1956). La particularité de la télévision américaine par rapport aux télévisions européennes est d’avoir été dès l’origine un média essentiellement privé.4 De plus, ces grands réseaux hertziens sont également des réseaux radiophoniques, et les premières émissions de télévision sont simplement des programmes radiophoniques filmés, dans les studios de Radio City à New York.
American TV shows have existed since the birth of this mass media in the United States. These fictions have evolved along with the American society for 60 years. As commercial and artistic works produced for an increasingly competitive market, they are witnesses but also mirrors of the changes of “the American mind” and public opinion. Television in America has given common cultural references and common memories to a very diverse population, scattered over half a continent. This article traces back the history of American TV shows, concentrating on how some major series have portrayed America.
